Domaine Charles Frey is a leading natural wine estate in Alsace, France. The winery adopted organic farming in 1997 and fully converted to biodynamic viticulture in 2001, making it one of the region's pioneers in sustainable agriculture. Today, the estate is managed by the third generation, brothers Julien and Thiébaud Frey. Beyond cultivating biodiversity throughout their vineyards to maintain ecological balance, they also built a fully natural timber bioclimatic winery in 2010 based on the Golden Ratio, complete with granite standing stones designed to harness the land's natural energy. Committed to indigenous yeast fermentation, minimal intervention, and avoiding unnecessary filtration, the estate captures the pure expression of its diverse terroirs—including the renowned Frankstein Grand Cru—crafting wines celebrated for their precision, purity, and vibrant sense of life.
This 2023 orange wine is made from 90% Gewürztraminer and 10% Riesling. After hand harvesting, the grapes undergo a 15-day skin maceration and fermentation using 100% indigenous yeasts, extracting the wine's signature amber-orange hue and fine tannins. The wine is then aged for nine months on its full lees in oak barrels, adding a silky texture and greater complexity. Remaining true to the winery's natural winemaking philosophy, it is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfur dioxide, preserving the purest, most unadulterated expression of Alsace's biodynamic terroir.
