VHS Wine, short for Vinous Heroin Society, was founded by winemaker Samuel J Smith in South Australia, with its first vintage released in 2015. Sam approaches natural winemaking as a form of creative expression, working with sustainable principles and respect for the vineyard while deliberately stepping outside conventional winemaking boundaries.
For VHS, a bottle of wine is more than simply an expression of a vineyard—it is conceived as a complete performance. From the wine itself to the labels and unconventional presentation, experimentation is central to the project. Sam has compared his approach to making music, with each wine designed to create a distinctive and sometimes unexpected experience, making VHS one of the more individual voices in South Australia’s new generation of natural wine.
Future Soul Vol. 1 is made from Gewürztraminer grown in Kuitpo Forest, South Australia, and is produced with skin contact, placing it firmly within the natural orange wine style.
Gewürztraminer is naturally known for its intense floral, tropical fruit, and spicy aromatics. Skin contact adds another dimension, extracting additional aroma, texture, and gentle tannins from the grape skins while retaining the variety’s exuberant personality. The result is an energetic and characterful orange wine combining floral and exotic fruit notes with spice, citrus peel, and a subtly grippy texture.
